2nd Roar [Voice/Action] More like a Whimper

[Ever since his arrival to Luceti Simba has been plagued with occasional nightmares. However, lately they've been getting worse and more frequent. In House 45, some whimpering and moaning can be heard from where Simba usually sleeps on the floor. His legs twitch as if he's running in his dreams, and eventually wakes up screaming.]

NOOOOOOOO!

[He looks around in a panic, ears plastered against his head as he pants. Eventually he realizes where he has and starts to calm down. Using a paw to brush some tears away, his eyes then fall on his nearby journal. Needing someone to talk to, he pulls it over and opens it up. It's really early in the morning at this point and he's not sure if anyone will be awake but... he'll try anyway. He stammers a bit as he talks to the book.]

Is anyone there?

...What has happened, little one?

And now you dream of it?

...Do you want to say what it is? I don't mind if you wouldn't, but your voice sound as if regret is plaguing you.

[Dad. Father. A father and regret. That is something Souji knows all too painfully well. He listens to the person on the other side sob quietly for a moment and then gets up from his seat, the chair creaking as he moves. He puts a note on the desk of the Welcome Center, grabs a cloak to go over his kimono and sets out. On the way he talks to the poor child again.]

I'm sure he knows you regret what happened.

Where are you? It isn't right to be alone when such scary dreams come back.

[45. 45. ...yes, that is close. He picks up the pace and jogs as best he can toward the house.]

Why do you say it's your fault?

[he is about to answer, but he's rounding the bend to the house and sees a little...cat? No, that is way too big to be a cat.

...that's a...big. cat. Yeah, he doesn't know what Simba is because lions do not exist in Japan.

Whatever he is though, the main thing is that he's scared and upset and as Souji draws closer, he smiles as reassuringly as he can before he kneels down, closing his book upon his lap.

It is easy to blame ourselves when we have no one else to blame, but that is a road that will never end, little one.

Who said so?

[because wow, that is the worst thing to tell a kid ever. even a kid that will eventually grow up capable of taking down gazelle.]

[oh, he's shivering. poor thing. Souji moves the book out of his lap and takes the cloak from his shoulders, setting it over simba. If he ever hears a guy named Scar showing up, he is going to punch him in the face. 8(]

Tell me what happened. Some people only look for others to blame, even if there is no one really at fault.

[It's worse than he thought, but he can see something in there that will be difficult for the little lion to come to terms with.

Maybe it was him who started it, but his father?
]

He loved you. That much is obvious.

[Souji reaches out and tries to pet Simba's head reassuringly.]

If he had to die to make sure you lived, I'm sure any father would do it a hundred times over.

[It seems a bit odd to wipe away a lion's tears, but he does so, smiling at Simba as best he can.]

I do think so. I think he would rather it have been him, than you that fell in that terrible place.

[He puts a finger under Simba's chin, trying to raise his face a little.]

You'll likely always miss him, and always feel this hurt, little one. Nothing much can take that from you. But missing him and honouring his memory by living well is the greatest joy you, as his son and treasure, can give him as your father.

If you want it, then you can make it happen.

[He lets go and looks up to where Simba is looking. The stars? Is there something significant about them?

He looks back down and studies Simba's expression for awhile and notices something like yearning. Sadness? Loneliness? ...Hope?
]

He will watch over you, wherever you are, and likely be proud of you, whatever you do.

[Perhaps that's the right answer.]

[Souji doesn't know what a hyena is, but whatever they are, he doesn't like them already. He reaches out and pets Simba's head gently.]

The place doesn't matter then. It's what you do that matters. To honour your father, live well, be proud, and-- [he tries to lift Simba's chin again] --never be ashamed of who you are.
